The Civil War helped to reduce the population within the US considerably. It allowed France to invade Mexico, which eventually allowed Benito Juarez and Zapata to defeat them, which gave future Mexicans something to celebrate on Cinco de Mayo. Without the Civil War, the Navajo uprising and the Mescalero uprisings of the early 1860s almost certainly wouldn’t have happened, which would have left them with far larger populations for some later uprising and might have changed the land ownership of various parts of New Mexico and Arizona by creating the need for larger reservations. All those men who were killed in the Civil War would have needed jobs, or would have had to migrate, which would have probably caused the development of the western states to proceed more rapidly than it did, by at least a decade.
